  • I really disagree. The aliens being insects is perfect because it provides a justaposition with the human characters. The idea is that the insects are a swarm of mindless drones. Meanwhile, the humans are…well, also a swarm of mindless drones. Which is sort of the point of the movie. The fascist society they inhabit actively dehumanizes them and robs them of their ability to think for themselves. The visuals of the film reinforce this in the larger fight scenes: the mass of gray bodies that constitute the human forces all blend together into a single swarm, much like that of the insects. And by the end of the movie Rico is completely hollowed out as a character: literally just inhabiting the same role as Rasczak, and even parroting all of his phrases from earlier in the film.

  • I’ve noticed a lot of them are “puritan pilled.” For example, growing up, if there were sex scenes in a movie you would say “yeah, that makes sense. People like to fuck and fucking is a big part of relationships. Showing people being intimate isn’t really a big deal.” But now, I’ve heard younger people complain about sex scenes in movies. Like, as if it should be reserved exclusively for pornography. Which is a very…reactionary cultural take. It’s sort of ghettoizing intimacy, and it’s very similar to the perspective of prurient Baby Boomers in the 1990s or 00s who wanted every movie that showed a penis to be rated NC-17. I wonder if the Zoomers won’t wind up having a lot more in common with their Baby Boomer grandparents than they realize.

  • as if attention and a positive agenda on this stuff was a bad thing

This is culture war propaganda meant to make people think this problem - false rape accusations - is far more common than it actually is by putting a spotlight on it. Actual instances of rape - typically happening to women - never receive the degree of media attention as stories like this. Probably because rape is really fucking common and there are over 100,000 instances of reported rape (and rape is an infamously under-reported crime) by women in the United States alone every single year, most of which lead to no jail time, prosecution, or even a police investigation into offenders.

  • picture of handwritten note taped to a window that criticizes Gen Z and praises Baby Boomers.

I’m not the brightest cookie in the toolshed but I know bait when I see it.

Edit: The top left hand corner of this is also dated 4/20. As the Brits would say “Someone’s taking the piss.”

  • This might be true, but Rowling also makes choices in regards to how she thinks we should perceive individuals who do want to change the world for the better. Hermione wants to free the house elves and is depicted as being a busybody and white knight more interested in her own sense of self-righteousness than actually improving the world. In art, just as in real life, the particular contains the universal, and we can make the logical conclusion that this is how Rowling broadly perceives people in the real world that advocate for social change.
