My son went as the loch ness monster this year. Cost about $3.50

I’ve tried three or four times, and always ended up dropping it. Never could get it to work with my exact config. I have a relatively complex network setup with vlans, firewall rules, and devices, so I imagine I’m more of an edge case though.

You could string up an automation for this. Reolink integration requires internet connectivity but exposes the doorbell to home assistant for follow on notifications if you like.

I used to have the amcrest doorbell but switched to reolink after two amcrest died back to back after only a year each. You need to do the initial setup using the reolink app like opening rtsp/onvif ports, but then you can feed it to frigate and disable internet access. I have this exact setup and it works well. They only thing I haven’t got working yet is two way audio. If you don’t mind reolink online, then you can use their app and integration for two way audio.

I mean if it doesn’t require cloud connectivity, then it just becomes the communication protocol right? I’d be fine with Google offering local only access as an alternative, but of course they only offer the newer model.

Now they have a taste for bats. Now they only eat bats.

The real answer is to tax the rich. Taxing groceries more? Just more taxes on the poors.

This 100%. Lot of brain dead takes here with “3 billion is a big number!”

+1 for this. Very solid using the homekit method. If you use the default integration, I believe it’s cloud connected.

Well yeah, they’re striking terror into the shareholders. Won’t anyone think of the shareholders?

I’m not convinced the second is true. Always seems to be resource based. Many places the US hasn’t helped because there’s not a financial incentive (see Africa for examples).

Should be r squared not cubed for area. I get ~1.7 miles or ~3km.

This is gonna lead to bebop levels of space debris.

ouch! Local only has been a long term campaign for me. The last thing was my thermostat which I found out was cloud connected when my network went down. I’ve since fixed it using the ecobee local homekit integration. Great test is to manually pull the wan port and see what breaks!

This latest outage was a great test for my home assistant. Only integrations that went down were weather reporting.
I should’ve known better than to trust my intuition on this. I previously ran the numbers on investing vs double mortgage payments and found investing to be far superior.
I just did the math for renting/investing vs buying, including rent/house value yearly increase, income taxes on capital gains, mortgage rate, down payment amount, and initial house price. The results indicate a strong dependence on rent price and taxes/insurance for buying. I found that renting/investing can be a better financial option depending on the inputs. As another commenter pointed out, the main reasons are taxes/insurance and the greater time return rate for market vs home value. This was surprising to me, so I’m glad I ran the numbers. That tells me the real difference is your life choice of wanting a place of your own vs renting and moving around.
I lost the most seats, making me the winner!
