Yeah it seems like you can’t cleanly attribute rocketry progress to a singular economic system. Even attributing the innovations from the US to capitalism is strange given that until the recent times I think you could argue that most of the innovation was coming from NASA, which is a government run program.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the most controversial TV finale?
3·23 days agoI disagree. I don’t think it whipped back and forth at all, I think it was pretty solidly foreshadowed, even from episode one. Who was acting unreasonable? Eren? That’s very clearly and explicitly stated to be him doing so on purpose. The rest of the cast seemed to act in accordance with their history from my view.
I also don’t feel like the Ymir lore was forced. I mean obviously there’s going to be some fantastical element to the lore of a show with titans and magic and such, so that part aside, I thought her story was really heartbreaking and encapsulated the themes the show was hammering home the whole time.
I think the time travel stuff was a bit fucky, which is one of my biggest criticisms of the show, and I also felt like Mikassa’s character should have had a better arc. I didn’t like the deus ex machina of Falco coming in to save the day with the people who didn’t want to be there, but the rest of it felt like a pretty satisfying conclusion to an incredible show.
To each their own of course, no shade or anything.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is the most controversial TV finale?
3·23 days agoI disagree with OP that it’s a bad ending. I think it ties it up well, and explains why the characters acted the way they did. There’s a lot going on and it’s easy to miss details that might make things seem like they come out of nowhere, but I think it was well done personally

2·2 months agoI think there are those people for sure, but this instance seems more in line with what the corporations are doing. I doubt the DOJ and the people responsible for this decision care one way or the other about the reality of the situation. They care about what hurts their “profits” which in this case isn’t money so much as political capital.

2·2 months agoI think the issue in this case is that the range of this specific car and battery doesn’t convey the impact of the battery innovation. If they gave an example of the range with that car and battery size using current battery tech to demonstrate the improvement, I think that would be more helpful.

I agree with you though, I know people that have a huge number of guns, but they collect them, and it doesn’t make them any more dangerous than some guy with 2 unless they’re trying to arm a group of people with old hunting rifles and weirdly specific revolvers of all different calibers.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some things for a new home owner to consider getting early on?
7·3 months agoI think there’s a lot of great ideas in here, but I’d start with the stuff that, when you need it, you need it now.
Something I didn’t see mentioned yet was a wrench to turn your water off at the line that goes into your house. If you’re on a well, then whatever tools you’d need to turn that valve off. If you spring a bad leak you want to shut that off asap
A few other things that seem like good things to have BEFORE you need them
- Plunger and drain snake (Good to have both, sometime the plunger won’t cut it, but it’s much easier to use a plunger if that’s all you need)
- First aid kit
- Fire extinguisher
- Carbon monoxide/smoke detectors
- Spare keys, give them to people you trust or hide them really well so you don’t have to break in if you get locked out
- A big bucket for leaks, mopping, etc
- ladder
- Generator if you can afford it
- Emergency bag with food, water, flashlight, spare batteries, cheap phone, list of numbers, map, first aid kit, etc
Those are the kinds of things I’d look to buying first since anything else you can just go get when you need it.

5·3 months agoSmall pet peeve of mine, wd40 is NOT a lubricating oil, it’s a penetrating oil, and a cheap one at that.
Penetrating oil is what you use when things are stuck. It will dissolve whatever old oil or grease was in a joint, and flush it away, and it can be useful for rust removal as well, but it is NOT protective. Get some kind of protective oil like silicone, lithium grease, or balistol for lubrication and protection.

It would be even worse if the only alternative was purely performative when it came to class issues and only better because they’re contrasted against literal fascists. That would be a truly sorry state of affairs for the BEST COUNTRY ON EARTH. Good thing it’s just a money problem.

16·3 months agoBeginning of the article:
An executive order signed Monday by US President Donald Trump may permit “random fascist vigilantes” to help him crack down on protests across the country, according to one prominent civil rights lawyer. The new order, which comes amid wider concern about Trump’s militarized takeover of Washington, DC, directs Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to ensure that each state’s National Guard is equipped to "assist Federal, State, and local law enforcement in quelling civil disturbances and ensuring the public safety.”
