As life keeps moving on I found that no matter how much I think I know, that is a near infinite number things that I have no clue about. So mt screen name is a constant reminder to remain engaged and humble in my vast ignorance.

British Telly @feddit.uk•Junior Bake Off final was "coronation" themed. Ilhām, 10, was asked her opinion of the monarchy, I can't believe they aired her answer, but she gives me hope.
9·2 years agoI am glad you brought additional context to the clip. I can see how he’d be reluctant to interject his views on the monarchy himself. I didn’t know how I should have read “little leftist firebrand”, even though I did enjoy her unfiltered and clear answers.

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•The face you make when someone asks about canister vacuums
34·2 years agoBack in my reddit days, there was a guy who did AMAs about vacuum cleaners that was actually incredibly informative. After talking and analyzing many machines, he suggested s couple vacuums. For my needs we got a Miele canister C1. It wasn’t cheap, but 8 years later it is doing very well. No fancy circuit board, straightforward, solid manufacturing, 8 year warranty, a dial controller for the suction. No problems at all. Probably will last another 20 years. It’s a great machine and has paid for it by not needing replacements. The closest thing to a complaint is that I wish the cord was about 1.5 -2m longer so I didn’t need to unplug it to change outlets 2/3 of the way through, mostly because I’m lazy.

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•Not even a rule anymore, I'm devastated
9·2 years agoTo add to others here, anger is neither good or bad. It is an emotion. It is okay to be angry at people causing pain and suffering. It’s how you deal and use anger that matters. As others said, let it be energy to create positive change and don’t allow it to burn you out from the inside.
So allow yourself to be angry, to feel the hurt and to be sad. Then do the work to make the necessary changes to make the world better.
Hugs

196@lemmy.blahaj.zone•Not even a rule anymore, I'm devastated
96·2 years agoThere are no answers here. The truth is you, and the entirety of the Czech Republic were grievously injured in your collective soul. Whatever the motives of the shooter was, it is a senseless crime whose goal was to paralyze your heart.
Grieve first. It’s necessary. However, don’t let this cruel, twisted soul poison you. They win if you let it happen. Use your pain. Start by being with friends, classmates and family. Offer little kindnesses. A cooked meal or a timely errand, even pausing to listen to another person who is working through the same pain you are. It’s doesn’t seem like much, but it is your humanity that will get you through this.
When you finally begin to not feel so frozen, maybe invest time into social action to prevent this from happening in your country again. Work to be sure our American disease doesn’t get a hold of your body. My country is broken here and the lesson you need from us is not let it infect you. Fight for it if you can.
Again, my condolences for all of your losses. They’re probably inadequate, but know you are not alone.
Take care, stranger.

Cooking @lemmy.world•[Discussion] What is your Thanksgiving strategy?
2·2 years agoSunday: dry brine turkey, wrap it up in plastic and refrigerated.
Monday: get bread from local baker, cut and toast to make base for stuffing, then make my cranberry compote.
Tuesday: make turkey gravy. Already have basic turkey stock, so cook additional onion and celery in stock and strain, then build gravy from a roux. Make my pea and corn succotash.
Wednesday: unwrap the turkey and return it to the fridge to let the skin dry out. Make the mashed potatoes with roasted garlic and a ridiculously large amount of butter.
T-day: roast the turkey, cook the stuff and bring other items up to temperature.
Others are bringing a couple veggie sides, desserts, salads and appetizers, so I’m pretty free for the main meal.
Like others, I do the turkey because it’s moist, tender and juicy in my hands and I don’t trust others to do it well.
If you are largely responsible for the meal but are forced into traveling to make the meal, I’d probably do most of the prep at home and if it’s practical, do most of the cooking there as well. You would have your tools there and won’t run the risk of forgetting something or having some clueless but well meaning relative ruining something that you care about. You can also get that lovely turkey gravy flavor by roasting turkey legs and wings in the oven a few days before, then using that with a mirepoix to build a turkey stock to make the gravy.
Seriously, consider switching to a water flosser. They’re very thorough cleaners of both the bits between your teeth and the bacteria in the gum line. It has vastly improved my oral health and once a day is plenty. Initial price is higher as you would expect, but it’s rare to replace any parts at all. The model I use is a basic Waterpik that I’ve had for about 8 years was $40 US when I got it. Think it now costs $60 (inflation sucks).

Making a nice meal for friends and family.
Which reminds me I haven’t made buttermilk fried chicken in a while…
