The Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA), a bill that allows for a wide range of government penalties for online speech, could soon be passed by Congress. If that happens, the access we have to information may be forever changed. KOSA will make state prosecutors and federal bureaucrats the final arbiters...

Correction: Conservatives want to control online speech.

The only control conservatives want over kids is to keep them quiet while they molest them.

Republicans are not going to molest all the children… the unfuckable ones will be put to work in factories.

He very much is. The two parties in the US at this point are conservative and openly fascist

That’s a tough one. Neoliberalism is still toxic as fuck. But, he’s the weapon we’ve been handed and he seems to be doing some damage at least.

All the angles to this KOSA bill are so interesting- a whirlwind of bad ideas thrown together. I mostly know it from its obvious attempts to target LGBTQ+ stuff, but it’s really interesting that they think that they should block the super sad news of our dying planet. The best part is that they don’t seem to be targeting say, newspapers or TV. Total idiocy.

Newspapers and TV channels know how to use their teeth - and can be bought. Buying the internet might be a bit beyond their budget.

Haha true, but I feel like opening up any old media except for CNN is often just as depressing in different ways.

In legal terms we call it pretextual law. And usually they are stuck down by courts because they aren’t here for this phony shit.

What’s even scarier is that it’s got support from both dems and reps: introduced by a Democrat, co-sponsored by 22 Republicans and 21 Democrats. https://www.congress.gov/bill/118th-congress/senate-bill/1409/cosponsors

Allowing the government to control online speech will create a world no kid should have to grow up into. At some point you have to ask yourself if you’re protecting anyone.

Of course they’re not going to.
