Project hail Mary, strongly recommend the book, strongly recommend the movie. Go ahead and watch the movie first because dang it’s impressive, but then read the book and get all the details they had to cut from a 150 minute movie. Really hoping they’ll release an extended edition.

Seconded. But to do the book justice, the movie would have to be Lord of the Rings long 😋

The Wrecking Crew. What a waste of time.

The humour was mostly meh. Some ideas went just nowhere (like one guy is shown to hold his breath incredibly long, does not get to use it once), and the collateral damage was just too much for this kind of movie. How am I supposed to like the main characters when they make jokes or cry over the dead mother when they just watched dozens of cars get blown up/wrecked on the highway (for sure there had be at least one family driving one). The SFX looked ten years old. I had more fun writing this comment than watching the movie.

Supernova (2000) 2/5 - The twist was very obvious pretty early in the plot. The movie also pretty clearly used sex to sell this on blockbuster shelves, but James Spader is hot so whatever

Sentimental Value 4/5 - Wrapping up my best picture backlog. It’s a pretty good emotional story about family communication

Kiki’s Delivery Service 4/5 - In case you’re curious, Kiki’s Delivery Service with English VO and the English subtitles of the Japanese version in IMAX is a suboptimal way to watch the film. Other than that it’s wonderful Ghibli film

Train Dreams 2/5 - It’s slow, long, and not particularly engaging. I’m just not the audience for the languorous types of movies, I’m just glad it was only an hour 45

Wanted 4/5 - I doubt anyone cares why but I have seen this movie over 15 times. It’s really fucking stupid, but it also is mostly aware of how stupid it is. The action is fun and the personalities are big, it’s worth a watch

Hamnet 3.5/5 - I get the whole mysticism mirroring the themes of Hamlet and telling inverted stories to draw comparison and generally what it’s trying to do. It’s good acting and writing, I just wasn’t really compelled

Small Soldiers 2/5 - The plot doesn’t really make any sense and it feels more than a little dated with the jokes. It’s too bad it was the 90s and we couldn’t have a girl lead a movie because Kirsten is 100x more engaging than the boy they got

Kramer vs Kramer 5/5 - Showed up late this at the theater but I was literally the only person seeing it so I got them to restart it for me and I’m glad they did. It’s rare that a movie makes me cry but when Dustin asks Jane Alexander to essentially be a godmother really got me. It feels much longer than 1:45 but I don’t mind because it’s really compelling

I always get really happy nostalgia vibes when I watch Small Soldiers.

It’s not particularly good, but it gives me the feelz.

Supernova could have a been a lot better, wasted opportunity IMO.

The one point I will give Supernova is that the cosmic horror of the object is well done. We don’t know what it is, why it does things to people or why they’ll kill for it. Also it can destroy the universe

I wanted something Wes Andersony after watching The Phoenician Scheme (which I LOVED) and put on Submarine. It’s a small budget British coming of age movie. I thought it was funny and enjoyed most of it, the acting and editing especially, but the plot felt like it was trying to do too much in the end. I’d recommend if you like Wes Anderson and The Inbetweeners!

    Nuremberg

It tells the story of the initial Nuremberg trials and focuses on the interactions and relationship of Goring with a US Psychiatrist. The movie is anchored by the three leads, Crowe, Malek and Shannon.

It had a really good build up and did a great job of setting the stage of what the stakes of the trial were. The three leads were absolutely spectacular in their roles and technically the sound, visuals and music were great.

I did find the ending to be a bit abrupt.

“This is not a test” - it was OK at best.

Some weird editing leaves you feeling like you missed a scene. And it’s more a teen drama than a zombie movie.

The main character is rather bland and dislikeable.

It does make me want to read the book to see if it’s any better so that’s a “win” for them I guess.

Just watched “Rental Family” with Brendan Fraser. I love this movie. Just really sweet and Brendan kills it. I could watch a 5 hour version of it and still want to see more lol.
