      Haha, yep!

I believe those are actually a kind of default headgear in the game Kenshi, either that or I’ve been using a mod that adds it in for so long I forgot it wasn’t default.

Heres the actual thing for those too lazy to click a link:

(komusō, ceremonial fuke zen buddhist … im gonna say ‘headgear’, though its pretty much a straw basket if you take it off and flip it over)

This is getting a bit further away from straw masks, but uh, Kendo faceguards worn during training… they actually have not changed very much in appearance, in ~125 years.

And they also may be seen as kind of spooky or ominous, as the European beekeeper masks are.

They’ve been redesigned to be safer, use modern materials, be more comfortable, but the look of a modern one is still very close to that of over a century ago.

(these are ‘shinai’ training swords, basically dried out and bound segments of bamboo, as opposed to ‘bokken’, solid wooden training swords)

(shinai v shinai, pre training match, ceremonial readying position)

      (shinai v shinai, colorized)

(naginata v kama + chain, colorized)

((‘naginata’ is literally ‘mowing sword’ or ‘threshing sword’, its a polearm, but not really used as a spear, its used in sweeping cutting motions, not so much thrusting motions))

((‘sai’ ‘kama’ originally were basically very common, handheld tools for working rice fields, basically just a minature scythe, also commonly dual wielded either as farming tools or weapons, not sure if the etymology there is an odd coincidence of totally different languages indeoendently ending up with nearly the same word/sound or…? disregard that last bit, I am a moron, mixed up my kobudo weapons))

      (dual portrait)

I believe all of these images are from prior to 1900, maybe possibly as recent as 1920, but I think they’re older than that.

Modern Kendo helmet and full bogu (protective gear/outfit):

As you can see in relation to my other meme post…

Tali’s entire headgear / shoulder up design basically just is a slightly stylized modern Kendo helmet, with a full, solid mask, and a hood over it.
