    As Hamidreza Janbaz, former adviser to the deputy minister of water and soil of the ministry of agriculture, told the Guardian: “We have 8m hectares (19.8m acres) of irrigated land in the country and we have dug 1m wells 80 to 200 metres deep, which means that there is one well for every hectare of the country’s irrigated land.”
