If you watch the latest Guardians, Rocket does come to the realization (and acceptance) that he is, in fact, a raccoon.

There was a whole show about Raccoons in the late '80s & early ‘90s. I still remember Bert Raccoon’s name so he must have been at least somewhat famous. I admit I didn’t remember the other raccoons’ names without looking them up, but it has been a while.
