I taught for a year. I was in Shenzhen. I was in a government school which had sick perks, namely an apartment and food stipend in addition to a modest 1000RMB monthly salary. I was able to pick up some side work when the school cut my hours. My best gig was SAT2 science tutoring. The students were all very bright and extremely motivated.

I also had a private class for 3 7 year olds that I absolutely adored.

I’m glad this is still going. I taught English in China about 15 years ago, and it was a very comfortable way to make a living even then. And once you have a visa and make it over there it’s very easy to find work, especially if you have the skills to teach advanced subjects like physics and chemistry. Though not much in terms of career path, it’s a good way to spend a year or two for the adventurer. A few friends even became entrepreneurs and stayed for a while. Though few did so permanently.

Just want to take this opportunity to point out how annoying it is that none of these “cartels” existed five years ago. It was Sinaloa, Zetas, and of course MS13 which I am sure were a mix of reality and CIA hype. But the venezuelan cartels were basically materialized out of thin air for political expedience and nobody questions the administration about it
